I came to Ithaca in 1975 as a music major at Ithaca College and have never left. I currently live in Ellis Hollow with my husband, Mike Rider, and one formerly feral cat.
I have been a professional organizer since 1987, when I went to my first NAPO (National Association of Professional Organizers) conference in California. My clients throughout the years have run the gamut from having one messy closet to having a house about to be condemned. My classes have covered a variety of organizing subjects, including decluttering (my favorite), avoiding procrastination, office organization, and running a successful garage sale.
Since 1993, I have worked full-time as the Program Director for the Community Arts Partnership, Tompkins County’s arts council. Since Covid, I have discovered my love of zoom, where I can help anyone, anywhere! And people can show my their homes over the internet.
I never get tired of the subject of belongings; why we keep them, how our identify is tied up in them, why we have trouble getting rid of them, the joys of garage sales (yes, really! I love them). I am not a minimalist, but my house is wonderfully decluttered and organized. Belongings in, belongings out!
I should mention that I am also a bit addicted to House and Garden Television, decorating books, and decorating magazines. Making a house look nice with the belongings at hand has definitely become part of my teaching conversations.
